Client

Established in 1911, Tate Publishing are part of the Tate galleries and museums in the UK. A division of Tate Enterprises, Tate Publishing specialises in visual arts and art history, publishing books, exhibition catalogues, monographs, and titles for children.

Brief

Tate Publishing produces an exhibition catalogue for most of their main exhibitions. They have invited Rose to create numerous catalogues for exhibitions at Tate Britain and Tate Modern over more than two decades. In addition to exhibition catalogues, Tate Publishing has asked Rose to design books and monographs. These have included soft back, hard back and limited editions, sold in the Tate shops and booksellers around the world.

Solution

Rose has created each publication to reflect the curatorial experience of the individual exhibitions. As a result, Rose has endeavoured to ensure the nature of the design and materials used in the publications are as eclectic as the exhibitions and artists themselves. Over the past 25 years, Rose has created catalogues for exhibitions and artists including Lynn Chadwick, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Angus Fairhurst, Henri Rousseau, JMW Turner, Duchamp, Manray and Picabia, Salvador Dali, Doris Salcedo, Paul McCarthy, Gilbert & George and Ai Weiwei. Rose has also created guide books for Tate Publishing, including Modern Art and St Ives, How to paint like Turner, and Tate’s flagship publication – the Tate Modern Handbook.

Result

Rose has designed more than 20 publications for Tate Publishing, winning numerous design awards in the process, including the British Book Design and Production Awards, and Graphis in New York. Rose were also responsible for designing Tate Publishing’s best selling publication – the Tate Modern Handbook.
